Scottish Ballet's sell-out production

A tight-knit religious community unravels in a raft of accusations and knife-edge judgment in this enduring 20th-century classic from Arthur Miller. Now translated into a thrilling ballet, this highly acclaimed production comes from the Scottish Ballet, choreographed by Helen Pickett and scored by the aptly named Peter Salem. A sell-out on its 2019 premiere, and its London engagement in 2022, it now returns home after a tour across the pond.

What is the story?

After a group of Salem village girls are discovered dancing in the forest, cries of witchcraft fill the air and the resulting historic witch hunt ensnares local farmer John Proctor and initial accuser Abigail Williams in a dangerous game of cat and mouse.  

Weaving together poignant themes of hysteria, intolerance, reputation, social status and justice, The Crucible holds as much relevancy today as it did when it debuted in 1953. Originally written as an allegory for the Red Scares and McCarthyism in America, its portrayal of the Salem Witch trials mirror a modern world in which the truth and fiction are indistinguishable, where those in power do not necessarily hold the moral high ground.
